Because it's only when you understand that death is always with you that you begin to see how precious life really is.

아가베 잎의 존재는 두 가지 상식에 어긋난다. 유령을 상대해야 하는 사람에게 아가베 잎은 퇴마 효과가 없다는 것, 그리고 일반인들에게 아가베의 가치는 그 열매에 있다는 것.
그렇게 길가에 버려진 잎을 지나가던 퇴마사가 먼지 속에서 구해주었다.

In their free time—and time was the one thing they had plenty of—the afternoon sun would slip through the narrow window around five or six o'clock, dust drifting in the light. They would watch their daughter run from one corner of the room to the other. They didn't understand her strange behavior then and simply chalked it up to a child's game.
Outside, the world was racing forward into the future. New systems, new schools, new breakfasts, trains bound for foreign lands—everything appeared as if from a dream. They refused to stand on the sidelines, having their lives dictated by interest payments.

집 밖에선 세상도 빠르게 달리고 있었다. 새로운 제도, 새로운 학교, 새로운 아침 식사, 그리고 이국으로 향하는 기차가 점차 모습을 드러냈다. 모든 것이 꿈처럼 새로웠다. 그들은 방관자가 되고 싶지도, 이렇게 이자값이나 걱정해야 하는 삶을 이어가고 싶지도 않았다.
문을 열자 지나치게 과묵하던 딸이 구석에 웅크린 채 집에 귀신이 있다고 말했다. 그 순간 그들은 자신의 딸이 이상한 행동을 하던 이유를 깨달았다.
이 얼마나 위대한 발견인가!
신대륙을 발견한 항해사처럼, 평범한 삶의 껍질을 깬 그들은 고개를 들어 새로운 하늘을 바라보았다. 말재주가 쓸모를 발휘했고, 잊혔던 혈통은 다시 설득력을 얻었다. 성직자가 뒤로 물러나고, 성가는 기록으로만 남게 된 이 시대에, 새로운 ‘영매 명문가’가 등장할 차례였다.

She had three hours to complete Mr. Andrew's commission at a cornfield fifteen miles away. Their car rattled along the edge of the desert before finally reaching their destination.
Mr. Andrew explained that an evil spirit was haunting the cornfield and disrupting road construction. He needed her to finish the exorcism in two hours.
"Efficiency! That's what matters!"
She spotted a villager hiding behind a pile of construction materials. She was clever enough to know the truth—that was the real "ghost."
June 4, 1915.
An urgent commission: an evil spirit had appeared in Captain Miguel's house. His family suspected it was his dead colleague. Her parents claimed this job was a rush order, so they charged double.
By then, she could sense spirits using exorcism herbs and her arcane skill. The ghost hiding in the wardrobe wasn't trying to hurt the captain. It was weeping from fear and loneliness.
She performed the standard exorcism. The captain offered no word of thanks.
February 3, 1916.
New magazines and newspapers arrived in town. A publication called Portrait requested an interview with her. At her parents' urging, the feature was slated for the cover.
She ran outside and hid in the shadows where no one would notice her. She whispered to the world, "Quiet. Please be quiet."
After that, she decided to tell everyone she couldn't hear the ghosts' voices.

彼女に与えられた猶予は三時間。依頼人であるアンドリューの要望を果たすべく、彼女は15キロ先の村にあるトウモロコシ畑へと向かった。砂漠の端をゆく車は激しく揺れ、ようやく目的地へと辿り着いた。
アンドリューによれば、悪霊がトウモロコシ畑に居座り、目前の道路建設を妨げているのだという。彼は二時間以内の除霊を彼女に求めた。
「効率だ!何をおいても効率が最優先だ!」
建材の山陰に、隠れている村人の姿があった。目の前の存在こそが、いわゆる幽霊の正体であると、彼女は瞬時に見抜いていたのだ。
1915年6月4日。
緊急の依頼が舞い込んだ。ミゲル大尉の屋敷に悪霊が出没したという。大尉の家族は、死んだ同僚の亡霊の仕業ではないかと疑っていた。両親はこれを急な割り込みであることを理由に、報酬を二倍に吊り上げた。
彼女はすでに除霊用の薬草と、神秘術で亡霊の気配を読み取る術を身につけていた。クローゼットの奥に潜むその幽霊は、大尉に害を及ぼす存在ではなく――ただ一日中泣き続けていただけだった。
彼女はいつも通り除霊を済ませた。が、大尉から感謝の言葉がかけられることはなかった。
1916年2月3日。
街には新しい雑誌や新聞が溢れ始めた。『肖像』という名の人物インタビュー誌が、彼女に取材を申し込んできた。両親の強い勧めもあり、このインタビューは表紙を飾る予定となった。
しかし、彼女はその喧騒から逃げ出し、誰にも顧みられない影に身を潜める。そして世界に向かって呟いた。「静かにして。どうか、静かにして」
その瞬間、彼女は決意した。自分には幽霊の声など聞こえていない。そう人々に打ち明けることを。

그녀는 3시간 안에 앤드루 씨의 의뢰를 끝내야 했다. 장소는 15킬로미터 떨어진 마을의 옥수수밭. 사막 끝을 따라 덜컹거리며 달리던 그들의 차는 마침내 목적지에 도착했다.
앤드루 씨는 지금 당장 도로를 깔아야 하는데 악령이 옥수수밭에 터를 잡은 탓에 문제가 생겼다며, 2시간 내로 퇴마해달라고 말했다.
"효율! 효율이 가장 중요합니다!"
건축 자재 더미 뒤에 숨어 있는 한 마을 주민이 눈에 들어왔다. 그리고 영리한 그녀는 그것이 유령의 본체임을 알아차렸다.
1915년 6월 4일.
긴급 의뢰가 들어왔다. 미겔 대위의 집에 악령이 나타났는데, 대위의 가족들은 그 존재를 죽은 그의 동료로 의심했다. 그녀의 부모는 긴급 의뢰라는 명목으로 보수를 두 배로 받았다.
그녀는 퇴마 약초와 마도술로 유령의 상태를 확인했다. 그러나 옷장 속에 숨어 있는 유령은 그저 종일 울기만 할 뿐, 대위에게 피해를 준 게 없었다.
그녀가 평소처럼 퇴마를 진행했지만, 대위는 그녀에게 고마워하지 않았다.
1916년 2월 3일.
도시에 새로운 잡지와 신문들이 등장했다. <초상>이라는 인물 인터뷰 잡지가 그녀에게 인터뷰 요청을 보내왔고, 부모의 설득 끝에 그 인터뷰는 표지에 실릴 예정이었다.
자리를 박차고 나간 그녀는 아무도 신경 쓰지 않는 그늘 속에 숨어 세상을 향해 말했다. "제발, 제발 좀 조용히 해 줘."
그날 이후 그녀는 결심했다. 자신은 유령의 말을 들을 수 없다는 사실을 다른 이들에게 알리자고.
