もちろん、宝石そのものを追い求める者たちにとっては、このような由緒や意義は考える必要がないのだ。

여행의 끝에는 전리품이 있기 마련이고, 영웅은 온갖 가시덤불을 헤치고 그것을 손에 넣는다. 눈부시게 빛나는 보석은 그중에서도 더없이 훌륭한 선택이다. 왜 사람들이 아름다운 광석에 매료되는지는 쉽게 설명하기 어렵다. 신분, 지위, 권력, 재력, 혹은 설명할 수 없는 축복과 저주까지... 이 반짝이는 침묵자들은 수많은 의미를 부여 받고, 그것들은 검, 왕관, 그리고 성물함에 박혔으며, 샤를마뉴 대제가 위세를 떨칠 때도, 제국이 세 개로 나뉘고 왕권이 흥하고 망할 때도, 계몽의 빛이 무지를 몰아낼 때도, 자유와 민주주의의 깃발이 높이 펄럭이는 때도 모든 걸 지켜보고 있었다...
하지만 보석 자체를 사냥하는 사람들에게 그런 문제들은 딱히 신경 쓸 일이 아니었다.
"다이아몬드, 에메랄드, 그리고 오닉스 조금. 이게 아빠 엄마가 이번에 갖고 온 수확물이야. 여기에 좋은 진주를 조금 더해 만든 팔찌를 미국에 가져가 전시할 거래."

If asked about famous pieces: Venus de Milo (ancient Greek sculpture), Mona Lisa (stolen once twenty-plus years ago—thief was a museum employee).

Brume: Well, it doesn't get any easier, I'll tell you that much.
Pandora Wilson: Have you experienced any trouble over the past years?
Brume: ... Nothing worth complaining about. Ms. Bouanich is a straightforward employer. Even if this job wasn't part of my original plan, traveling everywhere, seeing different places—it's been rather fun, in its own way.
Brume: Laugh if you want, but ever since I was young, I've longed to see the world someday ... In that sense, I suppose I've achieved my childhood dream—just not in the way I'd expected.
Pandora Wilson: So you haven't had a fixed place to live for years, right?
Brume: I have my Peugeot 201. Wherever I go, that's home.
Brume: Though, since you bring it up, I suppose it does come with its difficulties. The old girl's been with me for years—which comes with plenty of quirks, of course. It can all be quite nightmarish when I need a repair on the road.
Brume: The mechanics either tell me, "We don't have parts for antique cars," or they open the hood and freeze, saying, "I've never seen anything built this way" ...
Brume: That's why I've started carrying around the backup parts Laplace provided me with.

グレイッシュブルー:まぁ、数えたところで、あたしにとっては楽しい経験じゃないから。
パンドラ・ウィルソン:その間、何か不便に感じた点などはありましたか?
グレイッシュブルー:…まあ、特にはないかな。マダム・ベリルは気前のいい雇い主だし、本来の仕事じゃないにしろ、色んな場所に行って、その土地の風俗や人々の暮らしを見られるのは、案外楽しいしね。
グレイッシュブルー:笑われるかもだけど、小さい頃からいつか世界を巡りたいって思ってたんだ。だから、思ってた道筋とは違うけど、夢自体は叶ってると思ってる。
パンドラ・ウィルソン:なるほど。ではこの数年間、特定の住まいはなかった、ということでしょうか?
グレイッシュブルー:あたしにはプジョー201があるからね、行く先々が家になるんだよ。
グレイッシュブルー:ただ、それで言うと一つだけ悩みがあるかな。相棒とは長いからどうしても道中でガタがくるんだけど、出先で修理するのがほんとに大変でね。
グレイッシュブルー:奇跡的に修理工場が見つかっても、「古すぎてパーツがない」とか、エンジンルームを見て「こんな仕組みは見たことない」って言われるんだ…
グレイッシュブルー:だから、今はラプラスの人たちに用意してもらった予備パーツを持って行くようにしてるよ。おかげで修理の腕もめきめき上がってきたから、いつか仕事を失ってもこっちで生きてけるかもね。판도라 윌슨: 지금까지, 여섯 번의 ‘폭풍우’를 경험하신 거죠?
브룸: 생각해 보면... 맞는 것 같네.
판도라 윌슨: 세보지는 않았나 보죠?
브룸: 몇 번 있었는지는 모르지만, 여하튼 다 그렇게 즐거운 경험은 아니었으니까.
판도라 윌슨: 그동안 뭔가 안 좋은 일이 있었나 보네요?
브룸: ...불평할 정도는 아니야. 부아닉 씨가 좀 시원시원한 사장님이라서. 내 원래 직업과는 조금 다르긴 하지만 사방팔방 돌아다니면서 각지의 문화와 사람들을 접하는 건 사실 꽤 재밌거든.
브룸: 웃기다고 생각할지도 모르지만, 난 어릴 때부터 세상 이곳저곳을 둘러보고 싶었어... 그런 관점에서 보면 난 오히려 꿈을 이룬 셈이지. 과정이 생각했던 것과 달랐을 뿐이고.
판도라 윌슨: 그럼 최근 몇 년 동안은 따로 정해진 거처 없이 지내신 거네요. 맞나요?
브룸: 내겐 푸조 201이 있어. 어디를 가든, 그곳이 내 집이야.
브룸: 아, 그러고 보니 골치 아픈 점이 하나 있는데... 이 녀석도 벌써 몇 년을 함께 해서 그런지 잔고장이 늘어나서 걱정이야. 밖을 돌아다니다 보면 수리할 곳이 마땅치 않거든.
브룸: 정비소 사람들이 늘 하는 얘기가 ‘이런 오래된 자동차 부품이 없다’ 라거나, 보닛을 열고는 ‘이런 구조는 처음 본다’는 말뿐이라니까...
브룸: 그래서 봐. 나갈 때마다 라플라스 사람들이 챙겨준 예비 부품을 들고 다니고, 차 수리 솜씨도 점점 늘고 있어. 언젠가 또 실직하면 이걸로 먹고 살 수도 있겠지.
