But beyond them are countless other spirits and sprites. They are the proud daughters of Oceanus, taking no part in the wars of mortals nor the quarrels of the gods, simply singing their own songs as they glide gracefully through the gaps between stories.
Gaia gave birth to towering mountains and springs, which in time became home to the Nymphs. They gather myrtle, carnation, mint, and thyme for their flower crowns, string dewdrops together as clothing, and wander the mountains and valleys all day on light feet.
The Nymphs' magic goes no further than small tricks like transforming into plants; they watch over newborn gods and heroes, taking a lock of shorn hair, but desiring none of their power.
Their traces appear now and then between lines of iambic hexameter, usually because they were the harmless target of some god's prank, or because they turned the tables and pranked a passing hero instead...
Narcissus spent a long time living this carefree life, until the year she entered the aquatic sports festival and achieved the proud result of dead last.
Dead last?!

To achieve this goal, the nymph summoned the courage to leave Ephaistonos for the very first time, setting off into the unknown—utterly convinced she would find a surefire method to win, so that she could then rightfully invite her friends to celebrate her own great triumph together.
